John Decker
Rotary met at the Pere Marquette Depot on June 4. John Decker, Director of Athletics at SVSU spoke to the club about the school's programs, facilities and athletes. Several significant people personify the SVSU Program. He named National Heptathlon Champion Jauren Huebner, and former Dallas Cowboys starter Jeff Heath, and former player Matt LaFleur who is now coaching the Green Bay Packers.

Decker went on to talk about the variety of programs, for both men and women, that excel at the school. He pointed out, however, that athletes are students first. He talked of the program's reputation for the quality of the young people who play there.

Outlining how athletic scholarships work in college sports, at all levels, he noted that you'll see SVSU athletes working all around the area. Some are part time others are full time. He said SVSU is unusual in that all of their student athletes must earn or provide their own funding.

SVSU is a member of The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Since it's founding in 1972, GLIAC has been a leader in advancing and promoting intercollegiate athletics for men and women. Today there are eight members from Michigan plus others from Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Decker proudly talked about the school's Fieldhouse. Opened in 2014, this state of the art facility was the main part of the Ryder Center Expansion. This is one of just two such facilities in NCAA Division II schools. It stands out as a premiere facility which includes:
  • 85 yard football field with field turf surface
  • 300 meter indoor track
  • Bleachers with seating capacity for 1,000 spectators
  • Daktronics Fully Digital Results Board
  • Four full batting cages for baseball & softball training
  • Timing boolih for all indoor track meets
The utility of the Fieldhouse was attested to when the school recently hosted Michigan's First Robotics competition on the facility's floor.

Decker also talked about Title 9, the 1972 Federal law aimed at insuring gender equity in all school sports. (He noted that Title 9 is administered by the Department of Education, not the NCAA). The statute bases gender equity on the overall balance of a long list of items.

Tara Welch directed members to a printed list showing the information that the club has on the Club Runner computer system. She asked that everyone check their data for accuracy.

Tara also said that the club dues collection process will be the responsibility of the treasure from this term forward. She noted that dues e-mails will be going out from the Club Runner system in the next week. Be sure that you watch for them.

The Tall Ship Celebration is coming to down in mid-July. As always, Rotarians will fill a number of volunteer jobs. See Nancy Greve for details and to volunteer.

Remember to sell your Golf Outing Raffle Tickets. The prize will again be an I-pad computer with AirPods. See Cindy Chadwick for details.

The district has requested assistance with housing and transportation for a Rotary Global Scholar from Pakistan who will be in the area June 10 to 13. If you can assist, please tell Harvey.

The district also asked for help recruiting OUT-bound foreign exchange students. We have had a regular stream of inbounds, but it's been a while since anyone went abroad from our area. Informational meetings are planned in the next weeks.

The club will meet off-site on these dates:
    June 18 - Marriott Uptown
    July 30 - Marriott Uptown

At the board's direction, these Breezes, the club web site,
and the member database will be dropped as of July 1, 2019.

Replacing these systems, used for the last fifteen years, will be the Club Runner program. If there are features of the current system that you like or rely on, be sure to ask board members or incoming administration if there will be a replacement for that feature.
