Chuck Cusick
Chuck Cusick talked to Rotary about the current state of Rotary's Polio Plus campaign. But before giving the main talk of the day, Chuck gave the day's Foundation Minute. He related a letter recently received from a young student in Guatemala that Chuck and Nancy sponsor. The young Mayan man wrote about his life and education. He talked of his goals which include going on to higher educational opportunities thanks to Rotary and sponsors like Chuck and Nancy. Chuck made that point that the Rotary Foundation supports many causes other than Polio.

On the topic of Polio, Chuck said he came to the campaign when his wife Nancy went on a vaccination trip to Niger in 2003. When she returned she said Chuck had to take one of those trips. A couple of years later he and Nancy went to Egypt. Following that trip they went to Nigeria. They have also gone to Guatemala on other trips.

Rotary got involved with the Polio eradication efford in 1985. The campaign had started in the Philippines, which provided a test case. When the disease was eradicated there it was obvious that the world should be the overall target.

Polio was a dread disease before the effort to stop it. In the 50's, in the United States, parents took extreme measures to keep their children away from anyone who had the ailment or had come in contact with it.

The earliest documented cases are found in art from Egypt thousands of years ago. Even with this long history, people didn't know what caused the infection until the mid 1900's.

Jonas Salk developed the first vaccine in 1955. His work was followed by an oral vaccine developed by Albert Sabin in 1961. Thanks to those efforts the disease was eradicated in the US. Today few young people even know what it is.

Rotary is a part of a massive campaign supported by numerous organizations. Most notably, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation matches Rotary 2 to 1. With the other groups, polio is almost gone. From a worldwide plague in 1985, the number of documented cases dropped to 416 in 2013 and fewer than 26 in the 2019 report.

Progress has been made, but the final cleanup is proving the most difficult. Rotarian's gifts to Polio Plus make a difference. Rotary will keep going until the disease is gone. Even then the effort will continue to be sure polio never comes back.
