Memorial Day Observed

May 27, 2019
By: Stephen Kent

On a beautiful Monday America honored those who died in the service of their country. As guns rang out in salute, and the mournful sound of Taps drifted over manicured lawns, readings and prayers were offered at the graves of the fallen from past wars.

Memorial day ceremonies were held in most of Bay City's cemeteries. Historical Pine Ridge on the corner of North Tuscola and Ridge Roads is home to Soldier's Rest, which holds the graves of Civil War and other veterans. At least two services were held in this sacred site as others were held in the neighboring cemeteries.

Pine Ridge is special to many. Long abandoned, it has no actual owner. The all volunteer "Friends of Pine Ridge Cemetery" group meet regularly, raise money, and provide the loving care to keep this honored burying ground groomed and looked after.

This Memorial Day, as so many others before, honored and remembered those who went before.

A penny left on the top of the headstone shows that the grave-site was visited.
A nickel is left by one who trained with the deceased.
A dime means the visitor served with with the deceased.
A quarter is left by someone was with the veteran when they were killed.
